Cognitive Behavior therapy operates under the assumption that thought, beliefs, attitudes and perceptional biases influence the intensity and nature of emotions experienced . This means, a person who is disturbed not by things but how they analyse and respond to them . It is preferred for clients with certain intelligence(i.e. IQ above 70) motivation, insight and rational thinking .
The major therapeutic focus of CBT is on helping the clients to examine the manner in which he perceives and understand the world and to experiment with new and more adaptive ways of responding behavior. Breaking the distortion about -

  • 1. SELF
  • 2. WORLD
  • 3. FUTURE
Essence of CBT
  • 1.To enable the client to stand out himself
  • 2.Analyze himself objectively
  • 3.Analyze his thoughts (especially negative ones)
  • 4.Thoughts are taken up,analyzed and destroyed
  • 5.Number of sessions may vary from 1-20 & in average 8-12 sessions .

From earlier times psychotherapists have been adapting 'psychodynamic' approach for entering into the patients 'psycho' to gain an overall insight of the patients personality .

It is the process where the observations and interpretations of the therapist made to the patient is based on knowledge gained by patients average history . His/her family life, the early upbringing etc. all such factors which shape one's personality .

Thus, this therapy brings the unconscious mind into consciousness and help the person to understand their true, deep rooted feelings in order to resolve them. The therapist encourages the client to open up and explore unresolved issues and conflict hidden in the unconscious mind which are affecting their mood & behavior .

Techniques applied to this approach are :

  • Free Association : The technique involve the client talking freely to the therapist, saying first thing that comes to his mind . The spontaneity allows true thoughts & feelings to come out .

  • Therapeutic Transference : This is the transference of feelings for a significant person especially those which the patient unconsciously retained from childhood, upon the therapist . The patient may have varied feelings, ranging from extreme hatred , mistrust, dependence etc . the work of the therapist is to recognize & explore the conflict;it is through exploration alone of the concerned relationship that the client is carrying since his/her childhood .

  • Interpretation : Throughout the session the therapist remain quiet occasionally and help the client interpreting the clients topic - very cautiously, understanding his mental state and capacity to ingrate facts that they are not aware of .

Marriage partners come to the session before or after marriage, to seek professional help and sort out many a misconception involving a successful married life.

The major purpose of this therapy is based on the following approaches:

  • 1. Modification of unrealistic expectation .
  • 2. Correction of faulty attribution.

  • Modification of unrealistic expectation : Distressed couples are brought together and they discuss about their expectations which they bring with them in their marriage . i.e. a set of expectation regarding the benefits they bring with them a set of expectation regarding the benefits he/she will give or receive. These unrealistic, demanding expectations hold irrational beliefs. Spouses are guided in experimenting alternative ways of interacting to get differential consequences .

  • Correcting faulty attribution : Attribution in marital interaction is sometimes due to distortions in thinking .For example - over estimate the degree to which the events are related to oneself may lead an individual to assume that he/she has caused the partner bad mood, or jumping to a conclusion in the absence of evidence. Therapists work to shift & expand spouse's perspective, thus changing the behavior that spouses find distressing.

  • Teaching self instructional procedures : In marital therapy procedures, communication training, problem solving training, etc. are given to work and with impulsive responses, and are guided in the development of positive behavior and coping responses.

Family Therapy is one of the most promising treatment in today's age .

A family is the nucleus in the atom of society, where behavior and activities of each and every member acts like a catalyst for each other . A symbiotic behavior arises because of a dysfunctional family . There must be a clear generational line in the family . for example - If in a family the mother and daughter behaving like parents, in such cases the parental 'HOLON' is missing and the parental role is not entrusted with start appropriate responsibility . The basic assumption isthat a family should adopt a pattern that would maintain the 'UNITY' of the family . In this symbiotic process where the behavior of one individual affects the other directly or indirectly , an effective session can only take place, when the problem of the concerned individual is thoroughly discussed with his/her family members in detail and separately .

Play Therapy is a form of 'Psycho-Therapy' which is used to help children (3 to 11) express their feelings, resolve psychological challenges,his/her fantasies. A trained psychotherapist tries to find out the symbiotic meaning of their play, interprets and understand the problem .
In my chamber, I ask the concerned child to draw or paint . Where by he/she can express the feelings or observations he learns from the child eventually comes and through this process . Any form of fear, anger, resentment & depression of the child gets exposed in the whole process which follows in the painting/ drawing . The child unabashedly shades his/her inhibition in the canvas , the innermost conflict gets exposed in the sketches the child dabbles with
