CHILDREN (3-11 Yrs) THROUGH PLAY THERAPY

We often use play therapy for children that are 3-11-year-old. During these sessions the child is introduced to a box full of toys. The toys have been selected to help the child create an imaginary world. Children often create themes around plays that they direct and make themselves the main character and he/she is helped or despised by supporting members of the cast. The supporting cast may include family members, school teachers, friends or neighbours that the child grows up with. In this innocent game, the child playfully narrates the story and the real story or the issues that the child is facing are revealed.

Some children love to draw and through their drawing or painting they can express deep feelings or observations about the surrounding environment and from family. The imagination and innermost feelings of the child comes out through this process.

FAMILY COUNSELLING

Family is a great source of support, encouragement and love but sometimes relationships within families are put under strain and family members feel isolated or overlooked. Family counseling can help, when siblings aren’t getting on, or when parents are going through a divorce or separation. Forming a new family is a challenge and it is at this point that many parents seek professional help.

Sessions with family members:when a child comes for counseling, with his/her family, we try to involve the whole family in the proper mental growth of the child. A child whether in a joint or nuclear family is attached both to the grandparents as well as parents. The child is most cases gets pampering and admonishments in diverse ways from both sides. Being disciplined in ‘Parallel’ ways often makes the child confused and he/ she vents out accumulated frustration through rude behaviors, shouting, stubbornness, throwing fits of anger.

Likewise when a couple comes for marital counseling, we try to involve the entire family of both the boy and the girl to understand the situation better. The opinion of both sides of parents is important to analyze the entire situation because parents and in laws react differently to such cases and can give a rare insight into the problems, which can turn the course of circumstances entirely. The problem thus raised needs to be analyzed from various angles by involving family member’s attaché to the couple. We try to delve into the roots of the problem which acts as conflict amidst the couples.

SERVICE THROUGH MUSIC THERAPY

Music is the food of distressed soul. Music helps to vent out pent up feelings, accumulated over time. It creates awareness, soothes nerves and awakens semblance of rationality in human minds. In ourchamber, we encourage patients to listen to their favorite music when feeling low or depressed. Music is the greatest mood enhancer ever known. Our experience has taught us that teenagers often listen to music and we connect with them by discussing their favorite music and suggest music that they may enjoy and help calm their minds.

Hindustani classical music, with different ragas, affects our mood in diverse ways. Each raga denotes certain time and seasons and can produce splendid effects if one listen to it accordingly.

Being a trained musician Gitika, is aware of the different benefits of the ragas and discuss the same with patients who come to seek her counseling.
